I left the United States in 2007. I've now spent 19 years with my feet on the ground in 78 countries, searching for — and finding — the best places in the world to retire early, live well, and spend a fraction of what you'd spend back home.

I have detailed written reports about each place. Nobody else has done this the way I've done it. That's not ego. That's just the truth.

The question I asked myself was simple: What if I retired overseas, in a country where the cost of living is half what it is in the US?

That one question changed everything.

As I kept traveling, I started paying closer attention. I tracked costs. I compared neighborhoods. I interviewed expats who had already made the move, I looked at visa options, healthcare quality, real estate, and safety levels.

 
And I made a discovery that surprised me.

I had assumed that cheaper countries meant a lower quality of life. That the tradeoff for saving money was suffering. But I found the opposite to be true.

Expensive places have traded quality of life for materialism. People are so busy paying for things, they don't have time to enjoy anything. But in the places I was finding — places most Americans had never considered — people drank coffee from a ceramic cup. They sat with friends. They knew their neighbors. They had time.

When I land in the US now, I feel like I'm invisible. People rush past me, heads down, phones up.

When I land overseas, people look up. They smile at me. They're curious about me. Life is slower, warmer, and — here's the part that still surprises me — cheaper.

My financial disaster didn't ruin my retirement. It redirected me to a better one.

Now, how am I different from the other overseas retirement gurus?

It took me 19 years and a few hundred thousand dollars of my own money to figure out how all the pieces of this puzzle fit together.

The other gurus haven't been to all the best places. They haven't spent enough time in each one to actually compare them. I've lived in many of them — not just visited.

I've done the walking tours, the night tours, the cost-of-living calculations. I've created a consistent comparison through one set of eyes, over nearly two decades.
