This was our favorite so we stayed here (video). This apartment includes utilities and internet and 1 cleaning per week. She was offering it for much more but she eventually came down in price to get our business. It was a little further out from Parque Central than the other places we saw, but we both loved the neighborhood and the apartment. This landlord also has many other units and some really nice more expensive places if you are interested. Best Live Volcano Tour in Antigua Guatemala

When we were in Pana on Lake Atitlan, our host insisted we take the Acatenango Volcano Hike and live volcano tour (video) offered by Tropicana Hostel in Antigua Guatemala. Boy, are we glad we took that advice. Seeing an active volcano so closely in safety is a life-altering experience.

But just as importantly the Tropicana guides were so good at their jobs, we are not sure we could have made it up and down that hill without their help. Qiang was having trouble walking in a few spots and was sliding on the mountain.

One of the guides was able to walk alongside her and catch her a few times when she was sliding. His knowledge and experience gave her the confidence to go all the way to the campsite and make it back down in one piece. He even helped her carry her backpack when she was tired. We tipped both guides. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Most Colorful Festival in Antigua Guatemala

Semana Santa (video) is what Guatemalans call Easter week or Christian Holy Week.

The streets surrounding the central park are filled with colorful sawdust carpets and there is a free symphony that performs in the evening.

There are also scenes from the bible performed on the stairs of prominent buildings surrounding the central park. In non-pandemic years there are also hand-carried floats that proceed around the central park in a parade ceremony.

People come from all over Guatemala and the world to enjoy the festival. Check the calendar each year and come to Guatemala during the Semana Santa festival if possible. It happens during but towards the end of the high season in Guatemala when the weather is perfect and before the rains start.
