How to get 180 days when entering Mexico

In this report, we discuss how to get 180 days when entering Mexico. There are repeated numerous reports all over social media about people being denied the full 180 days when they enter Mexico. We hope this helps you get the number of days you need when you enter Mexico.

At the moment I type these words, Mexico has not published any policy documents that I am aware of that explains who is eligible for the full 180 days upon entry into Mexico or why some people are being denied. This decision is at the discretion of the immigration official that you encounter upon entry.

But if you study reports on social media, it seems that mainly Mexico is discouraging people from getting repeated 180-day tourists visas as a way of avoiding applying for temporary or permanent residency in Mexico.

Why some people are being denied entry into Mexico

I have done two videos on this 180 days in Mexico entry topic. The first video reports why some people are being denied entry or denied the full 180 days when they try to enter Mexico. The second video is our strategy to get the full 180 days on your FMM tourist card when you enter Mexico.

Mexico is also now requiring tourists to carry their passports and their FMM tourist cards with them at all times. There are many reports on social media of Mexican immigration officials stopping tourists and requesting these two original documents.

We used to just carry copies of these documents for security reasons but now we carry the originals as required by Mexico.

How to get 180 days when entering Mexico

Here is our strategy to enter Mexico for 180 days. Just because this strategy worked for us does not mean it will work for you. We share it only because we know what it feels like to worry about getting into Mexico after reading all of the sad stories on social media. Hopefully, our strategy will work for you too. We explain in more detail in this second video.

We brought the following documents with us when we walked up to the Mexico immigration counter in Mexico. This strategy is only for the countries that are allowed up to 180 days visa exemptions upon entry into Mexico

  1. Passport with at least 6 months validity remaining.
  2. The QR code was downloaded to our smartphone. The QR code is a questionnaire you need to fill out about any symptoms you have had within 24 hours of your flight. There is no Vaccine or Virus Test presently to enter Mexico but you must complete and download this QR code before boarding any flight to or within Mexico.
  3. Printout of the return or onward flight leaving Mexico. We recommend booking your return or onward flight with an airline that allows you to cancel. That way, you can cancel the flight if immigration does not allow you to stay for the full number of days you are requesting. For example, we booked our onward flight out of Mexico and printed it out about 6 hours before flying to Mexico. Since the flight could be canceled for 24 hours, we could cancel and get our money back if we were not given the full time we requested.
  4. Printout of the first accommodations or two that you will visit in Mexico.
  5. Printout of the following document we created. Just write the document in English and then go to Google Translate to make a copy of each sentence in Spanish.
