San Miguel de Allende Low Cost of Living
[kkstarratings] This is Dan from Vagabond Buddha. I collect data about the cost of living as I travel around the world. This is my San Miguel de Allende cost of living data. I have been to 64 countries so far. I left the USA in 2007, 11 years ago. I am looking for the best place in the world. Once I find it, I will call it home for about 6 months per year. This is my quest.
Above is the condo where we stayed in San Miguel de Allende for $16 USD per day.
Livability Factors: When I visit a new part of the world, I evaluate the ‘livability’. My livability factors include walkability, weather, Internet reliability, social opportunities, quality food choices, and political considerations. I use these to determine my personal desire to live somewhere. I have a high desire to live in San Miguel de Allende. Here is why.
Walkability: San Miguel de Allende has one of the highest walkability factors I have ever seen. The only time I order an Uber is when I have too many groceries to carry home from the supermarket. I don’t own or drive a car.
Internet: The Internet works great here. The wifi connection in our Airbnb apartment and in various coffee shops was perfectly acceptable, even for uploading youtube videos.
Food: The international food choices for a city of this size are perfectly respectable. There is Lebanese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, German, Argentinian, Chinese, Peruvian, Brazilian, and French. There are even multiple choices for almost all of these international foods and vegetarian and vegan dishes at most of them. If you live to cook, you may have difficulty getting some of your favorite food ingredients from home. But when your friends see how beautiful this place is from the pictures you post online, you are likely to get a steady stream of visitors. Make them bring you whatever you are missing from home.
Weather: The weather is amazing in San Miguel de Allende. You could even say that you are unlikely to even notice the weather. It will so rarely occur to you that you are either hot or cold, that you may forget that there is weather at all. Here is the weather by month of the year. It rains about 5 inches per month in June through September. That is just about the least amount of rain possible to keep it green here. You are unlikely to ever turn on the heat or air conditioning here, even if you have them. It has snowed three times in the last 50 years.
Things to Do: The colonial town center is full of things to do. Restaurants, bars, live music, theatre, painting classes, writing classes, yoga, and spirituality groups of all sorts. If you enjoy the outdoors and hiking, there are endless things to do in around San Miguel de Allende. Plus, you are just a few hours away from other tourist destinations and beaches.
Social Considerations: Everything and everyone from all around the world has migrated to San Miguel de Allende. You may have to be a bit creative to locate things, but if you are, you will find your tribe here or start your tribe here.
Desire to Move Here: I love San Miguel de Allende. I could call this home for 6 months of the year for sure. I am categorizing this place as high desirability.
Here are my estimated costs of living one month in San Miguel de Allende, as a temporary visitor. If you rented a furnished apartment by the month, it could be cheaper. You can rent a furnished 1 bedroom apartment ranging from about 500 to 2000 USD per month depending on how modern and how close you want to be to the colonial center of town. Craigslist even has listings available by the month. If you book my recommended flights, tours, or accommodations, you will pay nothing extra, but I will earn a small commission.

For more information about how the above “Cost of Living Monthly Multiplier” works, please visit the bottom of this page at Vagabond Buddha. The above table does not include alcohol, excursions, or extras, and it is for one person. These costs are based upon eating outside your accommodations twice a day. If you cook more in your apartment, you might be able to save more. I am not guaranteeing anything. These are just my notes from my personal travel.

Thank you, Dan of Vagabond Buddha
I am not offering you these prices. These are just my notes and estimates from the time of my visit and this post. Your costs will likely be drastically different if significant inflation or deflation occurs or the market changes after this post. I will not update these numbers until I am on the ground again here, if ever.
