Canadians working remotely in Mexico during COVID
David and Nazly were living and working in Canada when COVID struck in March of 2020. They immediately started working remotely in their homes in Canada. Then in October of 2020, they decide to move to Mexico since it was in the same time zone and they could avoid the cold Canadian winter.
They learned about the places they could live in Mexico by watching YouTube videos. Mexico was open to tourism with a 6-month visa for tourists. They picked Puerto Morelos because it was a smaller safer town with warm weather year-round so it had outdoor restaurants with tables spread out to reduce COVID transmission.
They Met Online: Nazly was David’s Spanish Teacher
He tried taking courses locally but didn’t really learn Spanish until he conversed online. They were introduced via friends and he learned to speak conversational Spanish with Nazly. They have been married for over a decade now and Nazly has Canadian citizenship.
$1185 USD Month Cost of Living in Puerto Morelos Mexico
Rent: Their rent is 1000 Canadian ($750 USD) per month. That includes everything. Rent, utilities, water, wifi, and airconditioning, plus two bicycles so they have no taxi expense. But you can save a few hundred per month if you come down and do your research in person.
Food: They are spending about 575 Canadian ($435 USD) per month on groceries, alcohol, and restaurants. They have no other expenses since they are social distancing.
Safety
They feel safe in Puerto Morelos. Nazly believes you do your research before you go and you pick safe areas. David’s safety trick is if local women are willing to walk around with their cell phone in their hand or in their back pocket, it is safe, and women do that here. They have had no safety issues in Puerto Morelos.
