Guanajuato Mexico Cost of Living
This is Dan from Vagabond Buddha. I am in Guanajuato right now as I type this! Here are my Guanajuato Mexico Cost of Living estimates. I travel the world as I collect data about the cost of living. I have been to 64 countries so far. I started traveling in 2007. These days I am outside my home country more than 11 months of the year. I am from the USA.
This post has the cost of living data I collected for Guanajuato, Mexico. Once I am certain that I have seen all of the best places, I will slow down my travels to about 6 months per year. I will spend the other 6 months in whatever place I love the most. Subscribe to my blog to the right if you want to watch this journey.

Livability Factors: Cost of living is only the first part of my evaluation. I evaluate all of my ‘livability factors’ when a visit a new place. My livability factors include weather, food choices, Internet reliability, social opportunities, walkability, and political considerations. If all of that adds up then I think about how long I could live there without getting bored. Could I live here 6 months per year? For Guanajuato, the answer to the question is yes. I have a high desire to live in this place.
Walkability: Guanajuato Mexico has the highest walkability factor I have ever seen. After our arrival from the bus station, we have only gotten into a vehicle once. We took an Uber to the Mummy Museum. We walked everywhere else day and night without a care in the world.
Internet: Our wifi connection in our Airbnb house is fabulous. We even uploaded and played Youtube videos. No issues at all.
Food: The international food choices for a city of this size are perfectly respectable. There is Lebanese, Chinese, Thai (limited), Japanese, Mexican, Italian, Argentinian, and French. There are even multiple choices for many international foods. Many also have vegetarian and vegan dishes. This is a University town, so there is a general desire for diversity in everything.

Weather: The weather is almost perfect in Guanajuato Mexico. The warmest month is May. The average high for the day in May is 88F or 31C. The average low at night in May is 57F or 14C. So it cools down at night in the summer because of the high elevation, 2012 meters or 6601 feet above sea level. The coolest month of the year is January. The average low at night in January is 44F or 7C. The average high for the day in January is 73 F or 23C. It rains about 10 days per month in May, June, and July. There is not much rain the rest of the year. We are here in July and it seems to rain at night if at all.
Things to Do: There are all sorts of things to do in town and lots of open land around if you like to hike. Considering the size of the town, there is a very active nightlife if you like live music, concerts, theatre, modern dance etc. Plus you are only a few hours from many other fascinating places for long weekends, etc. Also, please click the above link “Old Town Walking Tour” to see more things to do.
Social Considerations: There doesn’t seem to be as many expats here as a percentage of the population as other places, such as nearby San Miguel de Allende. But I hear languages from all over the world as I walk around town. The language I hear most, other than Spanish is English. I read somewhere that about 1% of the one million Americans that live in Mexico at least part of the year, are here. You would need to learn Spanish here to really have fun.
Desire to Move Here: Massive. I could call this home for 6 months of the year, no problem. I love it here. I am categorizing this place as high desirability. I like it even more than San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, or Cuenca, Ecuador. I think I like it better because it is a city in rolling hills like San Francisco, California. Plus, it is a University town.
Here are my estimated costs of living one month in Guanajuato Mexico, as a temporary visitor. If you rented a furnished apartment by the month, it could be cheaper. You can rent a furnished 1 bedroom apartment ranging from about 300 to 800 USD per month depending on how modern and how close you want to be to the colonial center of town.
Here is my list of the ==>best live-cheap in paradise locations<== in the world.

For more information about how the above “Cost of Living Monthly Multiplier” works, please visit the bottom of this page at Vagabond Buddha. The above table does not include alcohol, excursions, or extras, and it is for one person.
**The above high cost of living is lower than the medium cost of living because I am using a furnished apartment rental price of $600 per month. This would require you to rent the apartment for a longer period. If you are just coming down for a month, pick an apartment by the month on Airbnb to get a more accurate estimate of cost.

Dear John,
Than you for contributing such valuable information to people interested in GTO.
Best, Dan
Great article! I am a few years away from retiring to GTO. I’d like to add there are a few great Facebook Groups serving the Guanajuato expat community. The first is geared for those visiting or living in Guanajuato – all sorts of questions asked and answered about everyday life, or ask your own question and experts will answer it for you. The other Group is a constantly updated list of activities and events in Guanajuato – art, music, food… everything.
