In this report, we take you on our Mazunte and Zipolite Oaxaca Mexico Beach Tour including the hippie nude beach.
We rented a car in Puerta Escondido from Los Tres Reyes Auto Rental and drove south-east to explore the best beaches of Mazunte and Zipolite. They wanted 600 Pesos a day for the smallest car but Qiang asked for a discount and they gave it to us for 500 pesos per day which we were told included full coverage. We couldn’t read the contract (Spanish) so we aren’t sure.
We plugged the following Google Map into my smartphone and started driving.

We had the car for 4 days so we took our time enjoying this beach tour.
Beaches Toured
Playa Mermejita, Camino Mermejita – This was a very peaceful and remote beach with powerful waves (dangerous swimming conditions) and fine sand. Good for sunset, sunrise, and private-ish picnics.
Playa Cometa/ Punta Cometa – You’ll see a graveyard on the right as you exit Playa Mermejita back to the main road. Park there and follow the signs to Playa Cometa. You hike about 15 minutes to the beach (playa) or 10 minutes to the point. Best sunset lookout on this beach tour.
Playa Rinconcito – Mazunte’s main beach. No shade so rent an umbrella for 200 pesos and bring your sunblock.
Sea Turtle Center – This was closed when we were there.
Playa San Agustinillo – A small fishing village with a beautiful beach located in Santa María. Beautiful sand, swimming & sunbathing.
Playa Zipolite – Mile-long beach with a hippie vibe, nude areas are all the way west and all the way east, but adventurous nudes walk the whole way. Clothing is optional clothing. Nude Hotel is Playa Desnudo.
Playa del Amor – When you arrive at the most eastern part of Playa Zipolite (1 mile), look for stairs going up a small hill. Those take you up and back down to a small nudist beach called Playa del Amor. Qiang enjoyed the oysters here.
Playa Panteon – This beach is located in the small fisherman village of Puerto Angel, They rent snorkeling equipment but be careful if the waves are large. You can also take boat tours from here to see whales, dolphins, rays, and turtles. These are wild animals so there is no guarantee you will see any.
Playa Estacahuite – Small Beach so crowded on weekends. Snorkeling around the rocks to see many kinds of fish. You can go on snorkeling tours from here. Drinks and food in restaurants are reasonable.
